I Can't Hear the Vocals! Stop Blaming the Sound Engineer. You're Standing Where the PA Doesn't Reach.

You're against the stage. The drums are enormous. The guitars are coming from somewhere. The singer looks like they're giving it everything, but the vocal is barely there.


So you take a video, post it, and complain that the band needs a new sound engineer.


Maybe take three steps back first.

There is a physical gap at a lot of shows between the front of the stage and the useful coverage of the main PA. If you're standing in that gap, no amount of EQ, compression, or frantic fader movement at front of house will put a speaker in front of you.


This is what center fills and front fills are for.


The mains are pointed out into the arena


The main left and right speakers are designed to cover the audience area. Depending on the venue, they may be flown, mounted beside the stage, or placed high enough to throw over the front rows and reach the back of the room.


That coverage has to begin somewhere.


If you are close to the stage—especially near the center—you may be below the mains, inside their coverage pattern, or far enough off-axis that you are getting much less of the PA than the people behind you. You are not hearing the front-of-house mix badly. You are barely hearing the front-of-house mix at all.


Down low in the middle, pressed against the stage, neither speaker is aimed at you. That hole does not disappear because the engineer pushes the vocal harder. It only makes the vocal louder everywhere the system is already covering properly.


IEMs expose the hole

When a band uses floor wedges, some of the monitor mix spills off the stage. It is not a good way to cover the audience, but people at the front may hear enough vocal from the wedges to mistake that spill for the PA.


When a band is fully on in-ear monitors, there are no floor wedges throwing the monitor mix off the stage. Most of that spill disappears with them. That is usually a good thing. The stage gets quieter. The musicians get more controlled monitor mixes. Front of house has more room to build a clean mix without fighting several loud wedges firing in the opposite direction.


But the audience at the stage barrier may now hear exactly what is physically happening onstage:


  • Acoustic drums and cymbals

  • Guitar or bass cabinets, if the band uses them

  • A little noise from everything else

  • Almost no vocal, because a vocal microphone does not make the singer's voice louder by itself


The vocal lives in the PA. If the PA is not covering your position, the vocal is not covering your position.


That is not a musical problem. It is geometry.


Your phone records where you put it

This is also why videos shot right beside the stage can sound terrible when the show sounded good ten feet farther back.


Your phone does not record the mix leaving the console. It records the pressure arriving at the phone.


Put it next to the drum kit and outside the main PA coverage, and it will record drums, cymbals, stage spill, crowd noise, and whatever reflections happen to reach it. The vocal may sound distant or disappear completely. The guitar balance may bear no relationship to the front-of-house mix. If the bass and guitars are direct, even they may be missing while the snare takes your head off.


Then that video lands on social media with a caption about the mix.


Yes, that annoys sound engineers.


Not because every engineer believes every mix is above criticism. We hear our mistakes. Usually before you do. It is annoying because the video is being used as evidence of a mix that never reached the microphone in the first place.


You recorded the coverage hole. Accurately.


Complaining to the band does not move a speaker


Telling the singer you could not hear the vocal at the barrier is not useful. The production team needs to know where you were standing.


The band cannot perform its way out of a coverage problem. The singer cannot project over a drum kit, through a crowd, and into a phone microphone while using a handheld mic on a modern amplified stage. The front-of-house engineer cannot solve it by turning up a channel that already sounds right across the rest of the room.


And the person mixing the show may not control the speaker deployment. At many venues, the house system is where it is. The engineer operates the system they have, not the one they wish had been installed.


The immediate audience solution is brutally simple: move back until the mains start hitting you.


Often that really is three steps.


The production solution is also simple in concept, although it requires more equipment and proper setup: put speakers across the front of the stage to cover the area the mains miss.


Center fills and front fills close the gap

A center fill is a speaker placed near the middle of the stage lip to cover the front-center audience. Front fills are the broader version: several compact speakers distributed across the stage front, each covering part of the first few rows.


They do not need to overpower the mains. They need to restore what the audience in that area is missing—most importantly vocal intelligibility, along with enough of the instruments and tracks to make the show feel coherent.


Done properly, the fills are levelled and timed to work with the main system. Their coverage is kept where it is needed instead of spraying more sound around the venue. Depending on the system and the stage volume, they may receive the full mix or a version weighted toward vocals and the sources that do not exist acoustically onstage.


The goal is not for the front row to notice another speaker. The goal is for the song to make sense there.


This is why large festivals line the front of the stage with speakers. Look across the barricade at a properly deployed festival system and you will often see a row of small boxes aimed directly at the people packed against it. Those people are underneath the arrays and too close to be covered consistently by the mains.


The boxes are not decoration. They are solving the exact problem.


Coverage comes before criticism


There are bad live mixes. There are vocals that are too quiet. There are engineers who miss cues, systems that are badly tuned, and bands that create difficult stages.


But if the vocal disappears only when you walk right up to the stage, start with physics.


Take a few steps back. Listen again. If the vocal suddenly appears, you did not find a better sound engineer. You walked into the PA.


And if you are designing the production, do not leave the people who arrived earliest and stood closest listening to drums and good intentions.


Put a speaker in their face.
